My first post here. So, kindly bear with my mistakes I am graduating this december and have got a job offer at Norwalk in the Merritt 7 area. Now, I am looking for housing options. I am not able to make up my mind between living at Norwalk vs living at Stamford.

I would have to go without a car for at least a month or two. So, I am looking for walkable distance to Merritt 7 or access to public transport (if in Norwalk - walk or bus, if in Stamford - train to Norwalk). Also, I am looking for a safe neighborhood. I am single and searching for a studio or 1BR for myself (range anywhere between 800-1200ish).

Any suggestions on Stamford vs Norwalk for my situation would be great! Also, please help me with pointers to safe localities that I can search for and areas to avoid.

Thanks,
Shankar

You should know that you are moving to one of the most expensive places in the country. Finding an apartment, particularly near Merritt 7, that is less then $1,000 will be difficult. Without a car, you definitely should stay in Norwalk. Look for places near a bus line that serves Merritt 7 to make your commute easier. Good luck, Jay

Congratulations! It's very nice to see that you already have a job prior to graduating. That is wonderful.

Sorry, I don't have any advice about apartments. I would suggest sharing a house with other young people your age...that is very common around here. Very affordable and easier to meet more people.

@JayCT thanks for your suggestion! Stamford does seem to be an expensive proposition. I am ready to set aside upto $1200 for rent but I see good listings in craigslist only above $1300. I need to consider Norwalk seriously. Would you have any suggestions on nice and safe neighborhoods in Norwalk?

@renovating, thanks! yes, it is a relief to be having a job in hand in the current conditions Thanks for your suggestion. I will look into shared accomodations as well (I think that would help me find affordable places in Stamford too).

Just thought I would update here. I settled for a shared 2BR, 2bath. so I kinda got a little bit of privacy and it does not weigh too much on my pocket. It is a condo in Strawberry Hill avenue called Royal Pavilion (I read somewhere that it is a hotel converted into a condo). The roomie works at Norwalk and so he agreed to carpool till I get my car. So, that alleviates the transportation problem a bit too.
