Hi all,

I am currently living in Storrs, and will be doing some work in NYC in January. I will likely go into the city on a Monday, stay for the week and return on Friday.

I've looked at options for getting into the city - taking the MTA from New Haven, taking Amtrak from Hartford, and finally a mix option where I take the Amtrak to New Haven then transfer to MTA there to get to the city.

First, I know Amtrak is more expensive, and from what I've been told, nicer. Is MTA really that bad? Would anyone recommend one of these options over the other? Or perhaps another option altogether?

My second question goes to parking. I can probably get someone to drop me off at the station in Hartford, but New Haven may be a stretch. Is overnight parking available and safe in New Haven and/or Hartford? How much am I looking at per day?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Parking in New Haven is about $10 per day. I am not sure about Hartford. Amtrrak runs a couple of trains each day from Hartford but they are expensive.

The commuter trains from New Haven are frequent and less expensive. They are NOT bad at all. I am not sure who told you they were, but they do not know what they are taliking about. These trains are used by major corporation executives and Wall Streeters every day, plus you will only be on it for less than 3 hours, so how bad could they be. During peak hours the train is $41 while off-peak they are $37. Jay

You can also take Amtrak from New Haven. No real point unless you'd prefer to go into Penn Station instead of GCT, since it costs more and runs less often.

if you can get dropped off in Hartford, you can save a lot of money by taking the MegaBus - megabus US - Home
