I am coming from Hartford I need to be in Manhattan by 9:15am on Tuesday usually when going to the city I park in Stamford and take the train. But since I have to be there earlier than usual im thinking I should just park at New Haven. Does anybody know how the parking is in new haven if I wanted to catch a 7:30 Train.

There usually would be plenty of parking in the garage next to Union Station at that time. It is usually later in the morning that it gets full and you have to go to other lots. Jay

This is an old thread, so wanted to resurface to get the latest. Planning a trip to Manhattan next Monday morning, returning same evening. Debating whether to take Metro North from New Haven (will depend on parking availability) vs. Amtrak from Hartford (outbound is fine; not many options on the return). Thanks

If you plan on taking Amtrak and need to park your car. I would suggest leaving from the Berlin station (one stop south of Hartford) for Amtrak. Parking in Berlin is free.

If you need to save money you could take amtrak from Berlin to New Haven then switch to metro north.

It looks like I will be driving down to NH and catching Metro North, as there is much more flexibility with my return. A more specific question--if I choose to take one of the off-peak trains (> 8:00am departure) what is the parking situation at the NH station? What are the alternatives if the garage is full?

Thanks

Honestly, I've never had a problem with MetroNorth parking in NH and I've used it over a hundred times. There's a huge garage next to Union Station but if that's full there's another one right across the street as well. if that one is full, there's a few others that are a little bit further away but still in walking distance of the station. Just give yourself more time and try to get there early - reason being is if you have a hard time finding a spot you'll have more time without worrying about missing the train. Thats the one issue Ihave w/Union station - if you miss your trainto teh city it make be another hour before there's another one to get you there.

The garage next to Union Station will fill up if you go much later than 9:00 AM. There is a garage across the street but it too fills up. There is a huge surfacee lot right off Route 34 on Orange Street on the site of the old New Haven Coliseum that always has spaces. If you are on the late side you might want to just park there when you get off the highway and then walk the couple of block to the station. Jay

We're planning to take the train from New Haven into NYC mid-afternoon on a Friday. Any idea what parking availability will be like in the Union Station lots at that time? Is it likely that we'll be able to get a spot in at least 1 of the nearby lots? We'll be coming back on Sunday so the lot/garage would need to accommodate overnight parking.
