I'm doing research in Connecticut, and Can you tell me which one of these 4 towns is the best for a middle class family? Any information will help. Thank you
probably milford or shelton. fairfield is an upper class suburb of NYC along with westport. Trumbull is also more upper class located north of Bridgeport. Milford is a very large town which is more middle upper class.
It depends on what you are looking for. Fairfield and Trumbull have the best schools, but are much pricier. What is your price range? And will you need to commute, and where to?
Another option not on your list is Monroe, bordering Shelton and Trumbull. Monroe is a nice family-oriented town with excellent schools and parks.
The above is my ranking from a family oriented view. Keep in mind it is only my opinion. The previous comments are correct, Fairfield and Trumbull are more pricey. If you need to commute to NY in rush hour, Fairfield is closer and on the train line, I-95, and the Merritt. Trumbull and Shelton are only on the Merritt. I placed Fairfield over Trumbull based on the schools, Universities, beaches, and general feel to the town. The statitistics such as mill rate, we can provide if your still interested but if you can afford it, I would go with Fairfield as my first choice.
P.S. There is nothing really negative with any of the of the other 3.
I am from Chicago and relocating to Connecticut this summer. I keep on hearing about the "mill rate." Can someone explain what the mill rate is? We do not use that term in Illinois. Thanks.
Unfortunately, this is also the order of the expense of homes in these towns as well.
Therozman - There are two elements that determine property taxes in Connecticut, the value of the home and the mill rate. The mill rate is the rate per $1000 that a property is taxed at. If you have a home that is appraised at $100,000, the assessed value would be 70% of that or $70,000. If the town's mill rate is 30, the tax on the property would be 30 times 70 or $2,100. Hope this helps. Jay
ok, thanks.. Does anyone know anything about the east side, like Mystic? and New London area? we wont be commuting, I work retail and in the hair Business. Much obliged!
Southeastern CT has from WW2 till 1989 relied on the manufacture of submarines at Electric boat in New London/Groton. There is also the military at the US Sub base in Groton. At the end of the cold war, these industries downsized, causing the loss of thousands of manufacturing jobs. Though in recent years the employment base has at least stabilized after years of declines.
Southeastern Connecticut's' economy is now mainly focused on the two large and expanding Casino's at Foxwood's in Ledyard and Mohegan Sun in Montville, as well as other kinds of tourism. Multitudes of service jobs have been created, within these casino megaplexes and into most of eastern CT. Jobs locally will likely grow in the near future.
Housing costs are surprisingly affordable, especially away from toney communities like Old Lyme & Stonington.

ooh, sounds like I better stay on the other side.. I have 4 months to make a decision. Never been to Ct, but I have searched all the new England towns and Ct is the best, as far as living. Will look more in Milford..Thanks!
Shelton is an up and coming suburb that is greatly improving the quality of life. Many corporate office parks, solid schools, friendly residents and it's very centrally located. Also, you can't beat the price of Shelton for Fairfield County.
I'm not a huge fan of Fairfield only because I feel the town is becoming too uppity. It's a nice place to call home and the schools are great, but the people can be a bit snooty (remember, this is my opinion and experience before anyone attacks me!). I grew up in Fairfield but moved to a neighboring town for high school. I found that the people in the wealthier towns were less pretentious than many of the upper-middle class Fairfielders. Also I don't see why one would spend so much to live in that town when you can live 10 minutes away in Trumbull, Shelton or Milford and pay a fraction of the price. Schools are slightly higher performing in Fairfield, but what's in the numbers? It's all what you (or your children, rather) make of it.
