‘Tis the season.

Fairfield and New Haven County suburbs got hit hard the past few days with car break ins and theft. It’s been widespread in the suburbs, and the perpetrators are teenagers from the big 4 cities. They aren’t actually breaking into vehicles, they’re entering unlocked vehicles stealing belongings and, if keys are found, stealing the car.

My parents car alarm went off at 3 am today, and their neighbors unlocked car was rummaged through. A few steeets away, a car was stolen and later found in Waterbury.

Lock your doors guys. Just a little PSA!

Happening in central CT too most towns are seeing double digit increase over last year. Here in Manchester the police have also seen an uptick in joyride car thefts aswell. Noted that most theft was cash and most other valuables were left behind.
I had a neighbor up the street have a few bucks and some other small things taken out of their glove box one night. Currently the finger seems to be on teenagers.

Re: double digit increase in these crimes, absolutely. I’m surprised the media isn’t obsessing over this the way they do other, less important issues.

You’d be surprised how many in the suburbs do it! And not only do these thieves know it, they know because of their age, they likely won’t be held accountable even if caught.

Southbury, Middlebury, and Woodbury have been hammered with this type of thing over the past few weeks. Definitely stay alert! The thieves are targeting neighborhoods close to 84 and have repeatedly hit on the roads around Pomperaug HS.

Until I got keyless entry/pushbutton start, my car keys were always in the center console cup holder when the car was sitting in the driveway. Now, my keys are in my pocket but I still don't lock the car when it's in the driveway.

Why would I want to live somewhere I felt the need to lock my car in my own driveway?

Out in public, the car is locked and I don't have anything valuable in it that would encourage someone to break glass to smash & grab. Same with my bicycles. At home, they're not locked. Anywhere else, they're locked at all times.

A few months ago I created a thread (or maybe I made a post in an old thread, can’t remember) of an online news article where a video was shown of a car theft that took place in New Canaan. It was just as Kidyankee described.

Edited to add:

Here is the thread. It was in April.

This could be a statewide problem.
