Default The Avon Theatre, Downtown Stamford

Here is a photo I took this evening (April 23, 2009) of The Avon Theatre in Downtown Stamford. They usually show several very interesting independent films. Down the street (to the left of the photo - not shown) is a nice collection of bars and restaurants that are nice to visit after watching a nice film at the Avon. This is definitely an established institution in Stamford.

Default And more of Downtown Stamford

Here is a new batch of very recent photos I took from the Stamford Town Center mall parking garage. Unlike my previous photos on this forum, the photos in this batch have been edited. Enjoy.

1. The Bayview Towers. Perhaps, the ugliest high rises in Stamford and yet, at the same time they seem somewhat appealing to me. I can't figure out why...

2. Tresser Boulevard and the Stamford Plaza office complex (all the high rises). One interesting but little known fact is that the building farthest to the right was actually designed by none other than the celebrated Argentinian architect Cesar Pelli.

3. St. Mary's Church is clearly visible from the Stamford Town Center, despite being in the Cove section of town. The church was built in 1928 in the Italinate style and in 1987 was added to The National Register of Historic Places. On a more contemporary note, notice the nice reflection at the main entrance to ONE and TWO Stamford Plaza office buildings. The building on the right was designed by reknown architect Cesar Pelli.

4. The Stamford Town Center mall had its main entrance completely redesigned. Today its the most welcoming sight along the entire Tresser Boulevard.

5. Of course, what's a batch of photos of Downtown Stamford without the Trump Parc tower. Its very modern appearance contrasts sharply with the more historic buildings in the lower portion of the photo. On the lower left corner the clock tower of the historic Town Hall (currently being converted to a museum) is clearly visible. In this photo time travel is definitely clear, the 1800s meets the 21st century.

Stamford's big...HUGE plus, is that it is a bedroom city to NYC. Nothing more than a 30-45minute express train ride in.

That's why most of those towers are residential and residents bring life. (One of the reasons I'm so pissed at the watered down Front Street project in Hartford that was supposed to have a large residential aspect to it.)

The downside is a decent 1 bed apt is $1500 a month. Ouch.

That's cheaper than Hoboken. Still a bargain in most towns near me.

I wonder if Stamford will grow its own identity if Patterson continues his attack against businesses and wealthy people with his huge tax increases.

Some pics of the Ferrari Concourso at the state capitol in Hartford.

Great event to visit on Father's Day Weekend - Charity to CT Children's Medical Center.

Default Stamford at Night

Here are a few pics I took this evening in Downtown Stamford. I took these photos without a tripod, so please excuse me for a few less than ideal photos (tilted).

1. Here is a view of two buildings at complete opposite ends of my own aesthetic appeal. On the left is the former headquarters of International Paper, today its occupied by UBS; a building that least captures my attention from an aesthetic point of view. Across the street (right) is 300 Atlantic Street, one of the most elegant buildings in Stamford. Its most appealing side is the frontal area, however this rear view exudes elegance unlike its neighbor.
http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/5293/dsc0006.jpg (broken link)

2. This photo focuses on what essentially is a three dimensional version of the Stamford Town Center mall logo. In the background the very unique Marriott Hotel and the Cesar Pelli designed office building (left) are clearly visible.
http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/1618/dsc0010h.jpg (broken link)

3. The remodeled facade of the Stamford Town Center mall.
http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/2415/dsc0013w.jpg (broken link)

4. Here is a nice view of the Cesar Pelli designed building (its official name escapes my mind at the moment). Excuse the tilt of this image.
http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/6002/dsc0025s.jpg (broken link)

5. The historic and original Town Hall, currrently being expanded and converted to a museum. Its one of the most spectacular examples of classical architecture in Stamford.
http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/6513/dsc0052p.jpg (broken link)

6. The elegant main entrance to the UBS North American headquarters (aka Swiss Bank). One interesting fact about this building is that its home to the largest trading floor in the entire world.
http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/3449/dsc0063.jpg (broken link)

7. Another view of the UBS North American headquarters, this time focused on the main highrise section.
http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/4404/dsc0073z.jpg (broken link)

8. This interesting monument is suppose to be the largest of its kind the world, or at least it was at time it was built. It's located on the leafy sorroundings on the UBS property.

9. This is, perhaps, one of the first photos of the new Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) North American headquarters building. The construction of this office building was finished a couple or so weeks ago. It's definitely one of the most beautiful buildings in Stamford, looks much better in person.
http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/4839/dsc0070x.jpg (broken link)

10. Up close view of the RBS headquarters entrance. One feature that is clearly visible from the street is the giant television screen on the wall, partially visible in this photo.

11. One last view of the upper levels of the RBS headquarters, as seen through the Maple trees on the UBS property across the street.
http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/9745/dsc0074.jpg (broken link)

12. The final stretch of Washington Boulevard in Downtown Stamford, with one of the twin Stamford Tower buildings being visible.

Apparently, imageshack has removed many of my other photos.

For that reason I will start uploading them as an attachment into this website.

In any case, here are a few pics I took earlier today of the urban renewal in the South End of Stamford. This is the new avenue that was recently opened to the public. It sure doesn't look like the old and rundown neighborhood.

There are plenty of projects currently in execution. I'll try to take a picture of their billboards and the respective construction sites.
