Yup, that and the Dec 9, 2005 NYC got half foot snowstorm was pretty much the reason. Little ones do add up though. My point is, everything counts doesnt matter if its 1 or 2 only that helped. Just tired of hearing that out there.

As I said, thats typically the case. Id like to put something together on that to really see how often it's the case. Not sure the format yet
Normal is the average of the extremes..? Sounds like you are arguing that point. Which you said is not true for temps but apparently is true for snowfall.

Which by the way I wholeheartedly agree with ...

Again?

Does this look like Normal is the average of extremes??

Once again,, NO.
Majority of data will be on either side of normal. Extremes are extremes and fewer of. #BrokenRecord

Ok..I forgot you don't like the use of the word extreme in this hypothesis.

Ok ..fair enough...

I am TRYING to communicate the fact that extremes are a part of whats normal and I agree you cant look at them as anomalies.

example,.. we will average slightly above normal for the period from 3/3 to 3/9.

Average high about 45

But high temps will look like this for Danbury over this period:

35,38,37,43,54,62,68

Looking at it, only one day was near normal. Normal in this case is the average of weather that was nowhere near our average.

My point is regarding weather we do not have a lot of days withing 3 degrees of normal. Its an average of events that range below and above.

Cool stat...for the month of February only THREE days were +/- 3 degrees of the normal high in Danbury.

Now lets look at Miami:

They had 13 days +or- 3 degrees of the normal high for the month.

Point is we are more a product of weather variations than an average.

Another thing I hate is (I do it myself sometimes!) when people say "we should be" at ____.

Like when tomorrow is at 52°, you'll hear people say," we should be at 45° this time of year"...

Ummm, no. In fact, look at that graph again and realize that being right on "normal" doesn't happen as much as being on either side of it. This is more true when using the Averages for more than just the daily but the point is there. Majority of our temps, rain, and snow will be on either side of normal.. but not the extreme end.

Speaking of normal and above...

We are in the 30s and low 40s today (normal) but look to the west.... Above normal is coming. I assume once those clouds / front passes tonight we'll start to warmup?

Looks like they weren't ready to change the scale yet on the max temp forecast map..
On the right is the Normal Max for "MAY" 9th

Philly forecast of 74° is higher than the normal for May 9th..
Hartford 71° forecast is higher than the normal for May 9th..

But The immediate coasts look to be cooler than May normal. More like April instead.
Bridgeport forecast of 63°

Enjoy the Next 7 days. Looks like it will last long enough for people to enjoy it on the weekend too.

Problem is... Now 30s will start to feel like the arctic for some. lol

But keep in mind timing and strength of backdoor cold fronts could ruin the warm party

Where the record highs will be.

Remember, these are daily records which aren't as impressive as a monthly record. Just means the temp never got there on that specific day.

Another way of looking at it, if theres only 65yrs on record it means there was only 65 days it could of broke it on that exact day
