“The novel coronavirus has upended life in this county on the western edge of the state. Officials have said the pathogen appears to be “community spread,” unlike earlier Massachusetts cases that were linked to people who had either traveled abroad or had contact with an infected person.”

“The first COVID-19 case in the county was discovered in a Clarksburg resident who was hospitalized at Berkshire Medical Center, officials said last week.”

“Efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19 in Berkshire County have been tested by the region’s rural geography, small government workforce, and limited access to critical resources like public health nurses, reliable broadband, and even Boston television news, according to several lawmakers.”

In the most affected regions, of which the full Tri-State is one, the impact will be huge, primarily on service sector industries that are public-facing (retail, restaurants, hospitality).

Ct DOL unemployment claims last week, exceeded the pace of a month in recent years.

I have little doubt some of the retailers who closed this week are not going to reopen, due to being unable to service their debt, as well as suppliers, which means when the malls reopen, they cannot restock. I'd fear the same underlying cash liquidity issue for hotel franchisees.

Even if a stimulus occurs, it takes far longer to disperse the funds than most realize. In many ways, this is economically scarier than the Great Recession.

FFC will suffer immensely, and I wish it could be effectively mitigated, but I do not see how that could be done.

Keep an eye on corporate bankruptcy laws/rules. Corporations will often use bankruptcy to shed legacy liabilities that are costly like bad leases and high priced employees. Also, bankruptcy protection can give corporations some time to wait for the virus to go away. Bankruptcy is also a great leverage tool in renegotiating contracts.

Keep an eye on the rainy day funds. The state and local governments are going to see a big drop in revenue while also being called on to provide funds for relief. They will have to cut somewhere...

Long term this could be the start of people and jobs moving out of NYC to places like CT.
