Maybe in southern FFC. In most of CT, that house would be 400-500k.

I know a bit about this.

My husband was born in Richmond VA. His dad came to Fairfield County CT for work and this is where he stayed. His children and grandchildren all got good educations and most went to college. ALL of his children and grandchildren own homes in Fairfield County. When we (all average middle class) in CT all retire we will have far more choices and money than the relatives (all average middle class) who lived their entire lives down in the Richmond/Williamsburg VA area where his dad's family is from.

My husband and I were down visiting his relatives in VA when we first got married. I remember the house prices where about 1/2 of the cost here. I said "we should by a house here in VA, the house prices are so cheap". He started laughing and said "yes they are but the salaries are 1/2 (or less) too, trust me will be better off in the long run in Fairfield County." And in the long run he was correct.

You make more up north but it is equivalent to being in poverty in the south once you had all of your cost up

Those are colleges. We are talking about public schools for children.

That said, NC State is good but it is not a Yale. Jay

Not even $400,000. Here is a very comparable house in greater Hartford. The price is $395,000 with taxes at $8,242. The taxes on that Spring, Texas house are $6,796. That is a $1,446 difference, not nearly the thousands people claim. And keep in mind that Andover is part of one of the better school districts in the state (Regional School District 8 - RHAM middle and high schools). Not sure how good the schools in Spring are. Jay

Definitely not maybe. No chance it would be 1.8m.

In Concord, NC, you can grab a 3,000 square foot home for $300k with property taxes at $2k a year. That in South Windsor would get a buyer a smaller and dated home. Property taxes in South Windsor would be $8k. That’s a savings of $400 a month *just in property taxes*.

I think it’s fair to say that a $400 savings in property taxes alone [with a larger/nicer home in NC] qualifies as being more affordable.
Your estimate on taxes on a $300,000 home in Concord is incorrect. Taxes would be closer to $3,000.

https://www.zillow.com/homes/for_sal...3_rect/10_zm/?

Also you can't really compare Concord NC to South Windsor which is what they were doing. Concord is 25 miles from Charlotte so of course homes are cheaper there. South Windsor is just 8 miles from Hartford. A comparable town in greater Hartford would be say Willington where you can get a pretty nice newer home for $255,000 and taxes are $4,709 so the difference in taxes is more like $1,800 a year or $150 per month. Did you even look at the listing I posted? You couldn't have since the house in Andover that I posted was built in 2010. The house you posted was built in 2011. One year is not a lot older. And I would say the Andover house is a lot nicer since it has more land (1.4 acres verses 0.21 acres) and a basement. I would take the custom built Andover house over the cheap tract built house you posted any day. Jay

Sorry but what these articles fail to look at is comparable places. Yes, there are cheaper places to live in those areas but you have to go pretty far out or you must accept a lesser quality community (meaning poorer schools and lower incomes). Those places are cheaper for a reason. Jay
