Hey everyone! I'm interested in getting a new tattoo but since I'm relatively new here and don't know many people who have tattoos, I have no idea what places I should check out. Does anyone have any good recommendations for places to get tattoos? Thanks so much!
Hope Gallery Tattoo, New Haven. Quite a number of different artists to choose from and it's where my friends have gotten theirs. If/when I get one, I'd go with Phil Young at philyoungtattos.com for the complexity of his work.
I honestly just dont get the facination of tattoos, all I can think of is the pregnant lady I saw once in the mall who's belly button starburst, had turned into a big ugly broken up blue supernova all over her belly, and the old lady with the blue stain on back of her wrist that used to be a butterfly, but now looked like a bruise.

A lot of people don't. Imho the significance of tattoos has changed with every generation. Baby Boomers typically got tattoos that honored people, or the military/US or their own "badass" lives. Generation X started the awful trend of "fashion tattoos" with tribal, floral, scroll and Chinese words that said "I'm edgy but I didn't put any thought into what I wanted to get." I think of Generation Y as a hybrid--now there are tattoos that are meaningful (memorium tattoos, military service, religious), fashion tattoos, "throwback tattoos" (images/phrases that remind the person being tattooed of his/her childhood), and "innovative thinker" tattoos which are literary/math/science based or have individualized images that mean something significant but not obvious to the person being tattooed. On top of all that, you also have people that get tattoos related to his/her profession and/or hobbies. At this point, if you can think of something to tattoo it's probably already been done.
I put a lot of thought into my tattoos. They all have a significant meaning to me and I always make sure it's somewhere I can cover up. I would never get a tattoo on my belly for that exact reason. I don't just think about how my tattoo is going to look now, I think about how it's going to look in 50 years

The problem is the people who got those tattoos didn't understand the fascination either. They're an artform...if you own a picasso you need to make sure it's taken care of but many people get a tattoo without realizing they need to cover it in sunscreen and periodically have it touched up.
That said...to the OP...do you already know what kind of tattoo you would like? You should look around for an artist who specializes in the genre you want rather than the "closest place to home."
If you're interested in fantasy type tattoos (either color or b&w) pm me and I'll give you info for my guy.
