How Do You Record HDTV? There is no such thing as a SVHS HDTV Recorder and the videotape machine died years ago. The only way I can record HDTV is to watch and record HDTV through a computer HDTV card and software. I got that already but I'm wondering about a standalone recorder like VHS tape.

It seems that a computer HTPC is better than a DVR. Google Shopping's DVR selection has them tied to Tivo and DirectTV.

DVR - Google Product Search

This DVR that isn't tied to cable TV - you can't transfer the recorded shows to computer HD, you have to burn a dvd. http://www.jr.com/pioneer/pe/PIO_DVR560HS_hy_BS/

So I guess a Home Theater PC is my best option.

Yup, I built a home-brew high def HTPC about 5 years ago and connected it to my 42" plasma via HDMI. It has worked fine for recording HD TV shows, and there are no pesky subscription fees.

The problem is there is so much crap and drivel on TV these days, that I hardly use the thing anymore.

How do you get output from the HTPC to Plasma? Do you use a DVI to HDMI cable?

I use a standalone desktop (Acer Athlon X2 215, 4GB RAM, 750 GB HD,) in a compact chassis that fits under the TV stand. The main advantage of this system, aside from being cheap ($400 or less), is the HDMI port (and VGA) with Nvidia 9200 video chipset so it has no problem with HD video or dual screens. Using Win7 Media Center for programming/recording (and Hulu, etc...), although as usual, software is more buggy than dedicated hardware so it sometimes has Windows errors.

Actually D-VHS can record HD, probably won't find one new though.

Better off with something with hard drive IMO.

Here's one used: http://cgi.ebay.com/JVC-HM-DH30000U-...item35a9a017a8
