i have an hdtv with digital sound output, if i buy a home theater speaker and connect it to the digital output of the tv, will the home theater be the default speaker of my tv instead of its internal speaker?

i just want to have both my ps3 and cable to have a better speaker instead of the tv speaker. but i'm a little confused how to do this.

idk much about electronics and i only use my ps3 for netflix and bluray.

Of course each TV is different, but on the two Panasonic VIERA's that we have there is a setting in the TV menu to mute the speaker, and redirect the output to the optical out (It could be that the optical is always "hot", and the setting just mutes the TV speakers).

We just run everything into the TV via HDMI (or component for the WII), and it all goes back to the receiver.
