I've been using it for a few months (on Windows 7), after using AVG for a couple of years. It is unobtrusive. It does run scans and updates itself. I have never received any notice from it of a problem.

Does one every really know if their anti-virus works, or is it the kind of thing you can only know when it doesn't work?

I am using it on my Win7 system. I ran Microsoft Onecare for almost two years - I was happy with it but it doesn't work on Win 7.

So far I have no issues with Security Essentials.

I have been using it since the day of release. No complaints or issues.
