I succesfully replaced the hard drive in my compaq laptop and all was well for about a week. While troubleshooting a battery charging issue, I visited the HP web site for help and was told that my BIOS needed to be updated. After the update, my laptop would not start except for the cooling fan turning for 3 to 5 seconds and then a shutdown. No matter what I try it just cycles every 3-5 seconds. I have tried removing both batteries, hard drive, DVD drive with no fix.
If anyone has an idea, it would be appreciated.
It sounds like you killed it.. this should be a reminder to you to not update when things are working
I suggest you contact tech support but you probably won't get anywhere with that.. sell the laptop for parts and move on.. in today’s $500 laptop market.. you can get backup and running however yah want.. you can replace the motherboard if you want; a average used motherboard is $100-200 but that cost may be prohibitive too yah
It's been a while since I've done it, but the last time I did a BIOS flash, it saved a copy of the old BIOS code in case it needed to be restored. Did yours? I'd be willing to bet you can get versions prior to the newest ones at the manufacturers web site. Flash it again.
Most of the ones that do software bios flashes (via windows, like HP does), do indeed save copies.
However, since its a laptop you will probably still be needing to talk to HP tech support about getting it fixed. HP Tech support has been pretty kind to me when I screw up my laptop.
The bottom line is as I said he's screwed.. hp tech support will have a 15-1% chance to fix him.. he can't even reload the BIOS because his computer can't stay on.. and I'm not aware of a method of doing a CMOS reset for laptops.. are you?
