plwhit - I am not a techie and I come to this forum occasionally for advice. But I do try to research my issue best as I can, give as much info as I feel minimally necessary to allow these SMEs to provide the assistance I need. I think the OP should have come up with a more substantial reason for wanting the updates to stop, besides being "annoying". In another thread, I have been asking for advise on a replacement laptop, which coincidentally went out of commission after installing a Windows update. I did research this "black screen of death after Windows updates issue" first before posting here, and that's after a friend had one by one tried to eliminate which part of the laptop was broken (chip, SCSI controller, battery, HDD). As you can tell, I am beyond "annoyed" at losing my machine right after an update, but my research had yielded that MS had successfully defended their position on their patches causing such. It may just have been a coincidence and I'm leaving it at that. It won't stop me in the future from allowing the updates to install on their own. I will eventually run into problems later on if I don't.
Also, considering the technical nature of this forum, I think it behooves the poster to not just provide this one liner and not expect sarcasm in return. Truly, they are the most helpful people around in CD (as much as they themselves can disagree on the best approach sometimes). I think OP had just brought it upon himself to start the "teasing" by saying an update is annoying.
I thought this forum was to have lively discussions about technical things, help people out with problems they have..
Not to demonstrate how superior the poster is to everyone else.
I totally agreed with you because that is how I felt initially and used to feel all the time but after I took a deep breath (and got light-headed there for a sec) and started analyzing the question, I starting making educated guesses (seldom occurrence) on how tech savvy OP would be, I came to a similar conclusion as Escape:

So, these are the type of people who should never disabled something so critical to their system security as Windows updates. People who should/could disable Windows updates for whatever reasons are the ones that would already know how to do it. Heck even majority of these people wouldn't disabled Windows updates without a darn good reason.
I don't user any AV scanners but you will not see me coming here whining about my system getting infected or asking for Tek's or NHDave's or anyone else's help on how to clean it. I know the consequences of not having one, I have other kinds of precautions, etc.
I do however agree with you that instead of giving a sarcastic or obnoxious response, people should have in a clear way commented on the importance of Windows (security) updates and asked one simply question:
Why do you want or need to disable it?
a) Ill-informed novice user who thinks Windows Updates are unnecessary?
b) Some remote offline user who will be installing the updates from an external media or another private server, etc.?
c) A user with an illegal copy of Windows who doesn't want to get busted so instead thinks he wants to fly under radar by stopping Windows phoning home?
The man asks a simple question and gets sarcastic answers... good going, elitism at it's best.
Just what do answers such as the following show a new reader of this forum other than some wise-as* populate it?
Someone could have showed the OP how to pose this question on one of the search engines to better his understanding of the process.
We talk about uneducated users, clueless users... and what do we do to help them be better educated?
I can't help but notice that you have not made any effort to educate the user to the importance of Windows Updates, but only to berate those that didn't.

Just saying.........................
If I were one of the first posters I would have tried.. but sure as heck I would not have posted a sarcastic response like some others.......
The real issue is, how can the OP keep the protection on whilst removing the annoying popups - sadly, there is no fix for that, its how it was designed.
Agree with plwhit.
The first reply should have been: "Why do you want to?"
"It doesn't it too many times".
huh???
Clarification please.
