I heard today that the DOJ will no longer occupy he old business building by a very reliable source at a Christmas party. Has this been announced yet though that this is the case, I vaguely remember hearing this before?
Breaking: Frame of Mind to Leave Main Street for State Street . He can't afford to buy the unit and ostensibly a new landlord will jack up the rent. From the Free-times: Plessinger, who runs the Frame of Mind eyewear boutique and art gallery at 1520 Main St. along with his business partner Dana Taylor Getz, is moving the shop from Main Street to State Street in West Columbia in February.
It wasn’t an easy decision.
Plessinger’s 991-square-foot retail space, which Frame of Mind rents, has been put on the market by the landlord. The asking price — $230,000, which does not include monthly homeowners association fees — is out of Plessinger’s range. He and Getz have looked for a suitable spot that would keep Frame of Mind on Main Street, but they have been unable to find one.

Good article by Bolton but he misses some points............ I think folks in Columbia are too hard on the city and what it does not have and believe too much in what other cities say they have. No city is SC is a business center by any definition of the word however, Columbia is the state's banking center. Columbia is not considered a tourist town yet attracts a lot of visitors due to Ft Jackson, the Capital, area attractions, business and Carolina. Columbia has not labeled itself as one of 1,000,000 emerging tech hubs in this country yet has as many folks working in IT as other cities in SC. Columbia is the only "large" city in SC with a major comprehensive university (which also happens to have big time college sports). Columbia does not have a large signature project which leaves an impression. However, in terms of growth, income, education, etc....it is always at the top. The problem for Columbia to overcome is perception. Charleston is and will continue to do well because of the coast and flock of reitrees moving there. Greenville is getting a retiree crowd who wants a small town lifestyle. Columbia does not need to follow those cities to be successful. It should continue to build on its strengths. Folks are starting to notice what is happening in Columbia, partly because of Carolina and partly because there are a staggering number of projects happening all over Columbia. And, it needs to take more chances in attracting industry from manufacturing to professional. There are a lot of segments represented in Columbia from pharm to finance which shows how diverse the local enonomy has become. SC politics does not favor Columbia......not even close, that will take time to overcome. Nikki is not going out of her way to bring industry to Columbia, she would rather send it to the upstate where her political base is located.

@GSP101 I agree with most of your points but don't see much evidence of truth re: the above. Especially when you factor in Amazon, the tire manufacturers, Nephron Pharmaceuticals that have come and/or expanded in the midlands lured by tax breaks/incentives.
To me the editorial discounts what has been happening in Columbia's different districts before recent developments. This city has a big physical frame to fill out, and it has been doing so for a long time now. The developments that are underway now and that are on the drawing board will start to fill in gaps on the massive grid.
