I have told this story before. A large SC Professional Business Organization use to hold their Annual Convention in Charleston one year, Columbia the next. They out grew the Columbia Convention and now go to Myrtle Beach. I know for a fact they would love to return to Columbia as it is a central location for their members.
Awesome. Yeah, that looks a lot better. It’s nice they’re expanding, too. I saw they’ll add 3 stories to an existing building. Getting vertical but I hope they also add another building since, if I remember correctly, this building sits on a pretty big lot with ample parking.
Not to mention is also sits at what will become one of the busiest intersections on Huger. The state is building that overpass between the 2 apartment buildings and will close the crossing at Devine. A lot of foot and auto traffic is going to be pushed that way.

It appears to me everything but the existing 2 story building will be demolished including the current drive thru which will be relocated on the property. I think the new addition will basically triple to quadruple the current square footage and will up most of their property. I have always assumed the building across Huger belongs to them as well. Since they state that consolidation of locations (currently in 3 buildings) is a reason for this upgrade I think onset of they will be selling the property across the street (assuming they do own it since it has the same look and color scheme.)
Kirkman Finlay, Joe Taylor and others continue to analyze the need and cost to expand the convention center and build a parking garage. The attached article ends with the following.
“One study being used to promote the convention center expansion predicts an increase in visits by almost 150% immediately and by 172% five years in, Shefelton reported.
“That stands in contrast, Shefelton said, to the current data about why events have chosen to go elsewhere. Only a few events have cited the convention center’s size as an issue, according to his review.
“A more often cited problem, according to the data in the study: the limited flight options at Columbia Metropolitan Airport.”
Here we go again. the We should wait and see Councilman are once again gonna tank another major project that Columbia really needs right now. we have a major developer who is willing to Sink hundreds of Millions into the city and bring in Dollars and jobs and they want to play the Waiting game. I swear to god VOTE THEM OUT! They dont want to do anything and Columbia once again gets left behind for places like Charleston, Greenville and Charlotte.
It is massive and at night has CLAYCO lit up on top of it
