Like you Jim, I'd probably feel boxed in too if I lived in Ouray, but if I had the money to do so, I wouldn't mind giving it a try.

A friend of mine who lives off 550 in Ridgway says that, in the winter in Ouray, the sun "sets" at about 1p because of the huge mountains right there. Not good for those who find winter tough.
Jim, I thought you might have said at some point that you were moving back to Ridgway? At first, when I saw "drive 10 minutes to Ridgway," I thought you'd done it!

I got that boxed in feeling when I visited Ruidoso NM several years back. Odd to me that I've never seen it mentioned by those who live/visit Ruidoso. Maybe it was just me. Visit was very short, but the drive gave me that closed in feeling in downtown Ruidoso.

I spent a week in Ruidoso back in the summer of '06 and I never felt boxed in. But then again...it was summer time, the sun was high in the sky, and the days were long. Ouray in the winter, with the low angled sun, the short days, and the box canyon location is a different story.
