Hello. I am new here (first post) and would love some info on wilmington schools. How safe are they in general? what kind of reputation does the school system have academically? We are considering moving there full time; we have spent some time there this year and absolutely love the area. We purchased a place in Carolina Beach and will be spending the summers there. I was wondering if any of you could recommend specific schools in the area, as we will have one in elementary, one in middle and one in high school by the time we would move there in one year! We would want to live in wilmington, "close" to everything, and would let the schools be the deciding factor. Thanks so much for your time, I really appreciate it.

Wilmington is diverse. There are year round elementary (Coddington on Carolina Beach Road across from Echo Farms. There are private school (Cape Fear Academy) on S. College Road near Monkey Junction. There are private Christian Schools (Myrtle Grove Christian School pre thru 8th), Coastal Christian High School 9-12) and of course, the public schools. The public schools are not different than anywhere else. Some good, some not so good. Drugs, sports, etc. The private Christian schools have very good academics, are safe and their testing rates are higher. They are surprisingly affordable.

winter park elementary would deffinitely be my reccomendation for a public elementary but i think they are gutting and remodeling this upcoming school year, but if you arent moving till next year this shouldnt be a problem. roland grise is the best middle school to my knowlage (i went there not too long ago and it is the safest in my opinion) and hoggard would be the high school district that you would want to get into by far. academically our schools are good and the ones i named are safe and any drug use or anything like that was limited and very easy to ignore or avoid. if you are interested in a private christian school i would avoid wilmington christian acadamy because of academics and you would do better to look into myrtle grove christian.

Here is a great website to compare school "grade cards":

School Profile - School Level

Click on any school you are wondering about, and you will find a lot of useful info on each one.

I agree that Hoggard is a great public high school. I highly recommend that you stay away from New Hanover high school (drug use, low academics, etc). If you decide to live at your Carolina Beach residence all year your school district will probably be: Carolina Beach elementary, Murray middle, and Ashley high school. If you want to get your child into Codington (a wonderful year-round elementary that's known for high academics) you have to apply for a "lottery" drawing and it's too late for the 08-09 school yr.

Default please disregard my prior web-link

Sorry here is the gradecard website:

District Search Results Page

Also please note that it automatically shows you the 04-05 school yr - you have to manually change the school yr at the top of the page.
