Although not a meteorologist-I did weather, sea surface analysis and oceanographic conditions about the coast of NC on television for a number of years. I am also a 25 year plus resident of the Crystal Coast. This I can say-I can not recall a windier year.Now I have no official documentation-But it seems that we have had more 15knt. plus days than ever before.
But the good thing about the Crystal Coast is that we have both east/west and north/south facing beaches plus a wonderful system of sounds. So no matter where the wind blows-You can always escape it! The land mass blocks northerly winds-The barrier islands block the southerly winds!

Don't know about the rest of the state, but there is a proposed wind farm project trying to get built over in Carteret county. It's running into the usual red tape and NIMBY-ism... so don't hold your breath.
