We're on the verge of being empty nesters at my house. We plan on downsizing and aren't huge fans of the suburbs. Is Tremont a god place for a couple on the cusp of 50 with a couple of dogs or is it an area more for young professionals having fun before they start a family and he and for the 'burbs?

Tremont is absolutely a great place for empty nesters. I would say Cleveland's more happening west side neighborhoods, Tremont and Ohio City, are being populated by a combination of hipsters, young professionals, and empty-nesters. I hang out on the near west side a lot and I see a lot of older and middle aged people in addition to younger people. So I definitely think Tremont would be a great choice for you. It's very dog friendly, has lots of great things to do, and you'll be able to meet a lot of new people. Good luck with your decision.

Make sure to get as close to Professor as possible. Both areas have some streets with very charming if not premier housing stock, but the area is still far off from being safe. Tremont and Ohio City border some rough areas, but since Tremont is isolated from the rest of the city, it doesn't have as many sketchy people passing through. On the other hand, Ohio City has a lot of traffic from the bus stop/rapid at Lorain/25th as well as the hospital. There are always random transient people/bums walking around the area. Friends don't feel safe walking home from the bar out there. If you drive around the area, you'll see what I am talking about pretty quick.

I have a few friends in Tremont and hang out there a lot. It's really not that dangerous. It's average city danger. All kinds live there.

The transient/hood people walking around is not about me being worried about getting hurt or robbed. It's an overall vibe that sucks. The crowd I saw walking around Ohio City is what made me to decide to move to western Lakewood instead.

There are a few pockets of nice streets in Ohio City. Tremont is a lot quieter with less random sketchy people walking about.
