I just read with great interest the SF vs Atlanta thread regarding urbanity. And I have been seeing alot of threads about Miami come up about its density and urbanity.
I just visited Miami for the first time last month. I was very impressed with its density to say the least. Even flying in and out of the airport and looking out my window, I couldn't believe how dense it appeared. I knew the city of Miami was dense, but leaving the city, the density continued.
So, I figured a thread about SF (Bay Area) against a more appropriate metro from the SE U.S. would be a more fair comparison.
I would still have to give the slight edge to the Bay Area, but Miami is definitly right up there as well
Overall the bay - but Miami is actually pretty close - maybe in some the most modern versionof urban/dense development. Though with the excepetion of certain areas the street level still seems a little more removed from housing (even though the tower is right above)- just an observation though and that is changing. But areas like South Beach and Miami beach have that whole beach thing which is pretty amazing in its own right
In some ways the urban feel in Miami is a little different than the urban feel in just about any other city. San Fran is great (and personally one of my favorites) but has other cities with a similar feel. Not exactely but Boston or Seattlle etc. Miami is more unique in its feel. Both great cities and both definately feel urban to me; even if not exactely in the same way.
I voted San Fran for what its worth but more on some intangibles just on the feel

Well, at least you came and saw what it looks like for yourself. It just seems to me when people from Miami make statements like this on City-Data, people seem to think we're crazy or something. So many people have this idea of what Miami looked like 10-20 years ago, and it's hard to shake. But having lived in San Francisco, even though I now live in Miami, I have to give the edge to the San Francisco Bay Area simply because San Francisco by itself is incredibly dense. I certainly am glad you got to see the place for yourself though.
