You keep repeating this statement without offering anything to back it up. The fact is that NYC has the largest garment district in North America and hosts one of the largest fashion weeks in the world (along with London, Paris and Milan). Additionally, most international brands launch their first US stores in New York - a few that come to mind:

Muji
Uniqlo
Top Shop
Tretorn

... not to mention others that launched in NYC and spread throughout the US, like:

H&M
Zara
Replay
Prada
etc...

Assuming any of this is true, it still means absolutely nothing.

LA owns. Get with it and stop fighting the inevitable.

LA owns what? You fail to provide any facts why LA has a superior fashion industry and shopping to that of NYC. Please name some stores that exist only in LA, and not in NY.

This thread is funny. I'm late to the game and haven't read all the replies, but here's my take.

1st Tier
1. NYC
2. LA

2nd Tier
Miami and Las Vegas

3rd Tier
Other Major US cities

My 1st and 2nd Tier cities are the only cities that I think "I must go shopping" when I visit. Cities like SF, Chicago, Atlanta, etc. are major cities that have great shopping, but the shopping isn't really a must-do for me like it is in other cities.

LA is very close to NYC. They are admittedly different experiences. NYC wins out because it is the main headquarters or US HQ for most major designers, NY Fashion Week tops LA Fashion Week by a longshot and there is a mystique, for lack of a better word, about NYC shopping/stores.

Macy's, Bloomingdales, Saks 5th Ave, Barney's and Bergorf's all originated in NYC. There's a reason that Macy's in Herald Sq. is a tourist destination. This isn't your local mall Macy's - it's the one that launched them all. Sak's 5th - well, you're actually ON 5th Ave. It's kinda neat. Tiffany's - it's a major national chain, but the Tiffany's on 5th Ave and 57th is THE Tiffany's - an American icon - synonymous with Truman Capote and Audrey Hepburn.

All the major US fashion magazines are based in NYC - Vogue, Elle, etc.

LA and NYC both have their trendy, funky shops and hip rising designers and tons of fantastic shopping with many of the same designers and stores, but NYC has the history that still puts it a slight notch above LA. Thinking about shopping destinations or where tourists check out - LA has Rodeo, the stores on Robertson and Melrose, possibly the Grove, but that's kind of it. NYC has 5th Ave with all of it's famous department stores, high end boutiques, Tiffany's, Soho and the Village for the funky, trendy boutiques, the rest of the Garment District, the Jewelry/Diamond District - most of these are destinations just like the Empire State Building and Times Sq that appeal to people who don't even consider themselves big shoppers.

Why are people even mentioning Atlanta?? Unless you like to shop last seasons fashions and have to maneuver through a MALL filled with annoying "divas" and "divos" I really wouldn't consider Atlantas shopping ahead of Denvers.

10. Philadelphia
Probably the best list I've seen.

I might actually put Dallas and Atlanta above some of those other cities because if you go by US Fashion Capitals on wikipedia (I know, not always the best source) the list goes: North America: New York City, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Miami, Dallas, Toronto, Montreal, and Atlanta.
