I'd go Wheeling, WV.

Lovely place.

Second would go to Huntington, WV, and third to Asheville, NC.

Eastern Kentucky is defiantly a place to avoid at all cost. It is really a 3rd World Country in the United States across many statistical categories: in life expectancy (7 years below national average), education (only 50% of people have a high school degree), and income (40% of population below poverty). Other than a few natural gems it's overall not very scenic either.

I can see not extending "all the way to Quebec" but I do think parts of Pennsylvania should have been included. I think there are at least a few Pennsylvania counties that have/had those things deemed Appalachian like Scotch-Irish settlement, coal, etc. Also parts of Kentucky should have counted even if Eastern Kentucky is generally deemed dreadful.

My vote doesn't really represent me. I voted and then realized you could pick more than one region. I might have added inner Virginia or western North Carolina or both.

How rugged are you? What mountain activities do you like to do? If you are into skiing, you probably want to be up in West Virginia or Pennsylvania because there is more snow. If you like to sail, you might want to get a Flying Scot and move to Deer Park, Maryland. If you are a history buff, you probably want to be in Virginia. If you like the Andy Griffith show, you probably want to be in North Carolina. If you are a wimp about snow, you might want to slide further south into the Carolinas or Georgia. Personally, I like the Skyline Drive area of Virginia from Front Royal on south. Since the DC metro area is starting to extend into the surrounding mountain areas like Front Royal, VA, and Harpers Ferry, WV, I'd probably move a little deeper into the mountains to avoid urban sprawl and expenses. I'm not particularly gung ho about Georgia's mountains. I don't think Georgia's mountains are as pretty as Virginia or West Virginia. Plus, Deliverance was shot in Georgia.

Cincinnati is sort of in Appalachia.

But besides that, I will go with Cincy's twin and say Pittsburgh.

I would not pick any of these regions I would rather go to the rocky mountains because the rockies are way bigger and higher than the appalachains. But if I had to pick a region of the appalachains it would be in the great smoky mountains of tennessee in gatlinburg. And my second choice would be the black mountains of north carolina where mount mitchell is.And my last and third choice would be the blue ridge mountains near asheville north carolina.

Just curious, why do you prefer East TN over WNC?

It IS interesting that I've never heard of anyone talk about Eastern Kentucky. I mean, certainly heard a lot of great things about Western NC & Eastern TN...but never of Eastern KY...interesting that you mention it isn't scenic. I've never been there, but it seems most haven't been there either...so maybe there is a reason for that, if it isn't scenic, not much tourism then.
