San Francisco's skyline is the only part of it that's growing, in the last two years they built a massive parking garage and One Rincon Hill
San Francisco's skyline is nice, but in all honesty theres more to a city than just a skyline, it's just that skylines are nice to look at and they add to the city, but just look at a city like Los Angeles, that place is HUGE and it's skyline is anything but huge.

That can be seen as a "problem" or an "asset," as it's the result of LA having multiple urban districts. That's one thing I really like about LA.

That pic - while nice - only really shows two of many, many different skylines. Just the Valley alone has a couple of decent ones, like Glendale, Warner Center, etc.
I agree, New York and Chicago are definitely representing for America. It's just hard to compete with Asia sometimes though, they always seem to be coming up with new things faster.
I think it's safe to say that Dubai is currently the most ambitious city in the world in this department.
But I think that with all the supertalls proposed and approved for New York, I think NYC will only come second to Dubai. From what I've gathered...
Hong Kong has 6 current buildings at 1,000+ ft and has three 1,000+ ft skyscrapers approved, proposed or under construction. If all were completed they would have a total of 9 thousand footers.
Shanghai has 4 current 1,000+ ft buildings and 4 more approved, proposed or under construction, including the Shanghai Tower which will stand at 2,073 ft. If all completed they'd have a total of 8 thousand footers.
New York currently has 4 buildings at 1,000+ ft with 4 more under construction, 3 more approved and 4 more proposed. If all are completed they will have 11 thousand footers in their skyline that is second to Dubai's massive 14 thousand footers, with 15 more under construction and 8 proposed and 10 on hold. If Dubai were to have all of their 1k footers completed they would have an epic 47 thousand footers!!
Of course anything could happen between now and then. Some might be cancelled but then more might be approved. NYC is probably the only one that can compete globally. Personally, I don't think Chicago even comes close. The Spire for one thing has been cancelled.
NOTE: It's not to say that Chicago's skyline isn't nice or impressive compared to others globally. Chicago's skyline is still a top contender globally but in terms of size and number of buildings Chicago is one step behind globally. I think though that if Chicago were to get that Spire done and the few others proposed it certainly would be up there again. Even Tokyo deserves to be mentioned but the skyline lacks the height as there is no 1,000 footers built, up until the recent one that is currently under construction, Tokyo Sky Tree.
