Overall, Washington has more spectacular beauty--Mt. Rainier, Olympic Peninsula, Puget Sound. While the Oregon volcanos are nice they can't compare to the variety and size of the Cascade range in Washington(especially the North Cascades which are comparable to the Alps or Rockies). And Seattle has a better location than Portland and more big city nightlife and cultural offerings.
But Oregon has nicer, and has more off-the-beaten track places to explore--Washington feels so much more crowded. The coast is much nicer too, and has easier access from the Willamette Valley--only an hour or so away. And the towns in Oregon--including Portland although it's changed a lot-feel a little less slick and developed than much of Washington, nice old buildings, funky atmosphere, nice slow pace..
I love Oregon, but if I didn't have a job in Portland I'd probably strongly consider moving to Washington. The great thing about living in Portland is that all the beauty of Washington is only a few hours away in addition to everything in Oregon.
