I'd say Mississippi, with South Carolina second. It doesn't hurt that I have a parent from each of those two states.

Would someone care to explain to a confused west coast guy what exactly "southernality" is?

haha, you haven't been reading the U.S. General forums long have you?

I don't think it is a word. in this context it is the way people talk and dress. to some extent how they behave, what they believe, what they do in their free time, how they treat strangers. it is the result of the complex history of the region. it has dwindled over time, because people watch TV from New York and movies from California, so they are exposed to mainstream behavior and thought. I can't think of a good televised depiction of it.. maybe some of the Saturday morning fishing & hunting shows?

I get a kick out of all the people on here bashing the South. How the South needs some northern influence. I know everybody is proud of where they are from. Being from the South, I'm proud of the area. I would expect the northerners to be the same way. But what I don't see is a flood of people moving from the South to the north. I wonder why it is that way? I've never once thought that when I get to retirement age that I'll pack up and move to Cleveland or Pittsburgh. I want to retire to Edisto. That's only 2 hours from where I am. If the South is so bad, why are all of you coming down here?

#1 - Mississippi
#2 - Alabama
#3 - Kentucky
#4 - Tennessee
#5 - South Carolina (one of the fastest rates of growth than listed from the states above...Plus northerners are moving to Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head, and Charleston areas in droves)
#6 - Georgia - take away the Atlanta metropolis and you have a AL/MS/SC
#7 - north Carolina - Charlotte/Raleigh. The rest of the state is still pretty much southern

Cost of living in the south is significantly lower than in the Northeast. That, and as folks get older, many lose their tolerance for the cold and shoveling snow.

The reason would not be that North easterner's long to adopt the Southern culture. This can be seen by the migration pattern of Northern transplants. Typically, you will find them moving to areas where there is already a healthy population of northern transplants.

IMO, if you are anywhere in any of those states you have no doubt you are in the south, and that isn't changing anytime soon.

I'd say Arkansas and Kentucky before SC. SC is still Southern for sure, but the hordes of Northerners (including halfbacks) moving to the coast and the Charlotte 'burbs in particular makes for a modest cultural impact that's worth mentioning.
