Well, there's also been massive unemployment on account of economic fallout from the pandemic and some deaths and other damages directly from covid that might have been a bit different from years past. One thing is that tourism, international especially, but domestic as well, is one of the main pillars of NYC's economy which drives a lot of other industries and there's been a bit of a damper on that.

It seems like 50+ shot and 5+ homicides are the norm for any given weekend now in Chicago.
Austin, TX is now at 34 homicides for the year, (which is a lot for the city, given that they average around 30 a year).
