but I couldnt live in any of those cities due to the snow.
OKC probably has the best winters for someone who doesn't care for snow. Their January avg. is only 3 in! (according to c-d) I'm pretty jealous considering we had one of the worst winters ever here this yr. (Thank God its over!)

However, that's probably the biggest metro on the list.

OKC is WAAAAYY too far south for me. I need to stay far away from southern culture. Other than that, the only other one's I've really been to were Des Moines and Omaha. I chose Des Moines, because it's a little further away from the high plains' summer heat, and the winters are closer to what they should be. The one time I've been there, I was very impressed, not knowing what to expect. Omaha was okay, but Nebraska in general seems a bit too crazed about one college sports team. Things like that usually get on my nerves, even though I'm a sports guy.

I guess if sports are something that matter to you - having 3 state universities rather than one would be an advantage.

As for summer heat - I'm not sure if there's much of a difference. Looks like you are right though - Des Moines is a 'smiggen' hotter.

Des Moines does look slightly cooler in the summer. Every little bit helps. When I watch the weather, it looks like when the 100+ heat moves into the high plains, it often stops around the Iowa/Nebraska, and Kansas/Missouri borders, with Iowa and Missouri staying in the 90's. Not always, but usually.

I realized I made a mistake on *my* original ranking. Wichita and Indianapolis need to switch places. I would rather live in Wichita.

Madison, WI would be my choice, and by a HUGE margin too. Great city!

Madison or Des Moines. Madison seems like a fun city, but in the end I'd probably choose Des Moines since it's larger. Madison seems to revolve around the university.

If I had to choose, it would be Madison because of its location. But, between the Packers fans and Badger fans I would probably end up going nuts.

Actually, dawnxman, Madison, Wisconsin is larger than Des Moines, Iowa. Des Moines has 195K and Madison 230K.

Madison does have a bit more recreation, and the densest part of the city is located on an isthumus between two lakes. Beautiful. Low crime, clean.. terrific.

Des Moines is very appealing. It is the largest city in Iowa and one of the "hippest" according to the ISU website. When I have gone to Des Moines, I have had nothing but good experiences. Very good traffic for a city/metro of it's size.
