* - Honolulu is technically coexistant with Honolulu County, which includes all of Oahu plus the outlying islands. The USCD only includes the urbanized area of Honolulu in statistics.

** - There are 3 other city/county consolidations in Louisiana: Baton Rouge, Houma, and Lafayette. Though unified in most senses (i.e., a parish president), other places within the counties were allowed to maintain their identities, and the census bureau doesn't include formerly unincorporated areas or other 'towns' within the county as part of the city population.

*** - Boston is de-facto consolidated.

**** - NYC was formed through a 5-county merger/consolidation.

1 - Carson City (NV), Suffolk (VA), Chesapeake (VA), Virginia Beach (VA) were city/county consolidations to form independent cities, at which point the former county became extinct.

2 - Consolidations voted on and rejected (at some point between 1900 and 2010):
(CA) Sacramento/Sacramento County, (FL) Pensacola/Escambia County, Tallahassee/Leon County, Tampa/Hillsborough County, (GA) Albany/Dougherty County, (IN) Fort Wayne/Allen County, Evansville/Vanderburgh County, (IA) Des Moines/Polk County, (KY) Bowling Green/Warren County, (MT) Hamilton/Ravalli County, (NC) Asheville/Buncombe County, Charlotte/Mecklenburg County, Durham/Durham County, Wilmington/New Hanover County, (SC) Gaffney/Cherokee County, (TN) Knoxville/Knox County, (VA) Richmond/Henrico County, Roanoke/Roanoke County [to form/reorganize independent cities].

There are a number of other cities around the US where the idea has been officially studied or considered during the last 30 or 40 years, including Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Cleveland, Syracuse, Chattanooga, Savannah, San Diego, Fairbanks, Charleston (SC), and others.

There are a couple more examples of this case. Newport News, VA expanded to consume all of what was once Warwick County in 1958. Hampton, VA consumed all of what was once Elizabeth City County in 1952.

Kansas City isn't consolidated. It's spread across parts of three different counties.

The OP was referring to Kansas City, Kansas-- not Missouri.

Incidentally, KC MO is located in portions of four counties: Jackson, Clay, Platte, and Cass.

Not true. MiamiDade is the county but there are still dozens of separate cities. Miami itself is only 35 square miles of land and about 450,000 people. If MiamiDade were a consolidated city/county like the others, it would be 2.5 million people and one of the largest cities in the nation....not the second most populated municipality in the state. That distinction is held by the gigantic Jacksonville.

Washington DC is technically consolidated.

The City of Denver is also consolidated within Denver County.
