Oh, but then we could construct some humongous tunnels, at how many millions of tunnels, to offset that. But who cares about the cost, it is the objective right?

Those who do not have to pay for any of it can deem it a very practical endeavor. A century or so before we had rail lines all over the place, privately owned companies. Why do you think they gave up on their endeavors?

Because they were bought up by GM and put out of business to boost auto sales.

Until you devise a better system that is the way it will stay. You may think you have a better idea, but until the economic justification makes sense to the majority of people it will go nowhere.
