My cousin is selling her 1999 Dodge Neon with 135.000 miles on it. Are these decent cars, any major problems?

My brother drives a 2002 Neon. It's economical and reliable, but very basic. For no frills transport, it's not bad.

Its about the equal of a Chevy cavalier from those years. Some seem to hold up pretty well if they're taken care of.

Knowing who owned it I don't think that will be to much of a problem, they seem to take care of the things they have.

Two serious problems with the Neon.

1) Paint Pealing
2) Head gaskets blowing

Paint looked pretty good from where i saw it
Is this an engine design problem or just cheap gaskets from the factory

It's because of the Aluminum head. It tends to warp due to the heat. I woud think if the paints not pealing by now, it should be good.

A lot of them have head gasket and transmission issues... However with these things, you never know how the person took care of the car, it could be the owner and not the car's fault!
