President Bush may follow in the footsteps of his brother Jeb and convert to Catholicism, several European papers are reporting.

In the wake of the president’s visit to see Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican, Italian newspapers, citing Vatican sources, said Bush was open to the idea of converting to Catholicism.

Why not? The Roman Catholic Church is the only Church that can historically trace its roots all the way back to Jesus. The Church has a fascinating history. In good times and bad, it has always survived and it always will.

I think you may be safer to say that the Roman Catholic church claims to be able to historically trace its roots back to Jesus. That is not a fact; otherwise, it would not be disputed.

This is what bothers me. It's one thing to convert because you believe with all of your heart that it's the truth, but when you're "open to the idea" it sounds like you're not convinced so probably aren't converting for the right reasons.

More evidence that Bush isn't sincere in his beliefs and just used the religious right and the "moral values" issues to get elected. Nothing against Catholics or people changing faiths, but everything about this seems to point to more of a publicity thing.

If he does convert I say God Bless the President.

I think that would be a wonderful thing for him should he decide to do so.

Does that mean that the Bush library is no longer going to be at SMU?

Facts are disputed all the time. Elvis and Jim Morrison are both dead. Fact. But you can still find people who will argue otherwise. Even HUGE facts with indisputable evidence --- the Holocaust comes to mind --- are disputed by wackos with an agenda.

Facts matter little to people with a point to prove.

Let's not turn this into yet another Catholicism thread. It's only relevant as it pertains to the OP's link regarding Bush.

You wanna debate Catholicism, please do a search and revive an old thread or start a new one if one isn't out there already.
