Thanks for the posts, guys (and gals!)!
These people leave countries to avoid death, and often die before they reach our shores.
They usually run out of food and fuel; in this case, they were adrift at sea for days, and some people were dead on the boat before they were rescued.
Of course, Italy has been struggling to deal with it all. Where to put them, how to find out just basic demographic information, etc. So they were put into camps, where they had 3-4 toilets for 200 people to share. No showers for days, no changes of clothes..
Now most of them that have arrived in the last weeks have been moved to various parts of the country. Many want to get to France, where they have family or contacts. But France doesn't want them, and they've put blocks at the borders! So they are just wandering around..
There is an interesting association here in Milan which tries to help the immigrants get govt permits, work permits, medical provisions, etc.
I'm hoping to get involved in that in a serious way in the next weeks. There's so much to do!
Thank the Lord that medical care here is free!
Blessings!
