I tried doing a search but couldn't find anything. If this has already been discussed and somebody knows where could you please post the link. I just moved to chicago and am looking to find a church home. I live in Edgewater but iIt seems like all the good black churches are on the south side. Does anybody know of any good black churches located on the north side. thanks for the info

Try this one, I believe it's a black church. Oddly enough, it's in Lincoln Park.

Greater Little Rock The Lord Church

Are you looking for African-American or African? There's a Methodist congregation of West Africans in Lincoln Square:

African Community UMC
4754 N Leavitt St
Chicago IL 60625
773-784-3370
African Community United Methodist Church

N.B. - they share the space with a white congregation. ACCUMC has their services at 2:30ish on Sundays.

Well, technically it's not a "white congregation". Anyone can join the Methodist church, and there are many non-white members there.

All Nations Worship Assembly
Location: 3449 W Altgeld
Chicago, IL, 60647

Sundays @ 12:30 pm
All Nations Worship Assembly : Chicago, IL

I don't attend as I live on the far southside, but I've heard the pastor's messages on a few occasions and am sure that it would be a breath of fresh air...

Are you referring to this local church (Berry UMC) in particular or the UMC as a whole? Yes, anyone can join the UMC, but the vast majority of UMC congregations (probably the vast majority of congregations of all mainline denominations) are segregated on color and/or language lines. Not necessarily a good or bad thing, just the way it is.

Out of 150 or so members/regular attenders at Berry I would say there are maybe 10 who are not of Caucasian origin, so in my mind that's a "white congregation".

I'd say that's pretty unusual for a UMC in a metro area. It's not a "white congregation". There is no church apartheid. There are certainly "black churches" that have strong traditions that go back to the days of slavery, but there are not "white churches" in mainline protestantism that believe their church has some kind of white identity. And the "black churches" really are something distinctive in the U.S. I've noticed a lot of African immigrants tend to worship in the mainline churches instead of the "black churches". Or if immigrant groups have large enough numbers, they will often form their own churches to keep some of the cultural traditions from their home countries.

I know this is an old thread, but I thought I would bump it up. Any other suggestions? I'm looking for a church for my husband and I. We are an interracial couple. I'm open to all denominations, but would really like diversity or even a black catholic church on the northside to raise our family in.
