Hi all. I am moving to Chicago with my wife from Princeton, NJ after I finish graduate school. I will be working in the financial district and my wife will be attending grad school at Northwestern University. We are both pretty laid back and are looking for a neighborhood that is safe with plenty of restaurants and bars. We might be starting a family in a couple years so being near parks/young families would be nice as well. I should also mention that we are looking to rent a 2b/2b for between 1300-1800/month. Do you have any neighborhood suggestions for us?

East and Northern Lakeview. West LV is somewhat stale and lifeless.

Lincoln Park for sure

Bucktown, Wicker Park

Good luck

It might be tight for a 2b/2b in this price range in the gold coast. You probably want to stay near the Red/Purple line. I'd second Lakeview, especially if you can get near the Belmont stop, where the purple line express can take you to Evanston/ Northwestern. I also wouldn't rule out Evanston itself, especially if you are looking to start a family soon. There are a lot of young couples there.

A two bedroom in gold coast at the op's price may be hard to find.

Thank you all for your replies. It seems that most of you are steering me towards lakeview instead of lincoln park. Is there a reason why you think lakeview would be better for my situation?

I should mention that my wife will be driving to northwestern everyday from our place- for some reason she thinks the public transit is "rough" even though she takes new jersey transit into NYC all the time.

Actually, you'll be fine in either to be honest. It's a matter of flipping a coin. I've lived in both areas. I do like LP better BUT that does not mean I don't like LV. I live in West LV.......It's not as "live" or ethnically diverse as North or East LV. That does not make it a bad place.

Again either place is......

Driving to Northwestern's Evanston campus or downtown campus? I would agree that Lakeview to Evanston is a bit pokey, but certainly not much more jarring than NJ to NYC. If she needs to the downtown campus it is a breeze from Lakeview...

One word: Price!

Lincoln Park is simply more expensive than Lakeview in general.

Makes sense. I have been doing some searches on chicago apartment finders and it definitely seems like you can get more bang for you buck in lakeview.

Btw, for the person that asked, my wife will be going to the evanston campus everyday.
