What are the best / most realistic school options for a family moving to or living in the Old Town neighborhood of Chicago? I know there are a lot of popular schools there, but wonder which is best and which (if any) are on the upswing and which are falling fast?

Thanks!

Well I am sure what address you move to will dictate what neighborhood school attendance area you would be in.

Thanks -- I thought they were all magnet schools in Old Town -- is that not right?

I do not know. I would find it hard to believe if they were. Maybe someone else knows.

I believe Salazar is a neighborhood school for kindergarten and up and that is a so-so option. It has a great dual language program if you are a Spanish speaking household. The other public options are atrocious, mostly because they serve the Cabrini population. There are many high quality magnet and gifted elementaries within the vicinity such as Newberry for science, Franklin for arts, Lasalle for language and Skinner North as a classical gifted center. For private Walter Payton (only high school I think?), British School, Francis Parker and Latin School are all close by and cost more then some people make annually.

Sorry, didn't know. It looks so fancy when I drive past and my family is far, far from having to think about upper grades. Didn't mean to confuse the OP.

Either the British School or Francis Parker, about $30,000 a year for tuition, i believe.

The age/grade level of your children would be helpful (jeez, leaving this out makes me think you're not actually a parent, but just trolling).

In general: Schools in Old Town, depending on exactly where you are, both public and private, are some of the best in the city.
