I've never heard of an indoor athletic facility that uses real grass. Even the practice facilities for pro teams like the Bears use synthetic.

Well, if the unions keep driving away convention business to warmer, right to work states with lower exhibiting costs, maybe Mc Cormick Place can be converted into OP's vision.

If Chicago had any indoor parks, it would have to be a private indoor park only available to certain ppl b/c we all know it would be filled with riff-raff if it were public

Chicago Park District: McFetridge Sports Center (a.k.a. California Park) (http://www.chicagoparkdistrict.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/parks.detail/object_id/A5F32F28-6296-4001-9F78-A724DEEFAC03.cfm - broken link)

No they didn't (although I'm sure that legions of Manhattanites think they did); that was copied from Paris (http://www.flickr.com/photos/paytonc/sets/72157600174663948/ - broken link).

You and other general-public riff-raff can totally play soccer inside the Broadway Armory (http://www.chicagoparkdistrict.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/parks.detail/object_id/A2A37D39-6CE4-4113-A5EB-0147D8567E5C.cfm - broken link).

That said, during my first winter here I looked around downtown Chicago for a winter garden -- a sunny, enclosed atrium (which probably would not allow frisbees). Some examples might be the World Financial Center in lower Manhattan, BCE Place in Toronto, and the 2.5-acre Devonian Gardens in Calgary (where it's, well, butt cold). GM built one at Detroit's RenCen when it took over. The nearest spaces I found were 311 S Wacker, the Thompson Center, or the 9th floor of Harold Washington library, but those don't seem to live up to the city's size. I also looked around campus for someplace to enjoy a sunny but cold day; one's since opened at the new GSB building.

I love the winter garden but it is difficult to access and is often closed for events or otherwise. I wish the city would realize its potential and put a cafe up there for sitting and reading or allow open mics/poetry readings when the space isn't rented.

There used to be a subpar cafe ("Beyond Words") along the Congress side of the 9th floor, since that floor apparently has a catering kitchen. It had nice views over the South Loop (perhaps blocked now by Library Tower), but the food was bland, and it was in just another room -- not the vaulted winter garden space. With a bit more effort, and with access to the winter garden, it could be quite a nice operation.

How about something like this:

Tropenhaus Frutigen: The tropics open their doors

Maybe run off residual heat from power generation plants?

Another good winter solution is to build a greater underground city as Toronto and Montreal have done. Really, them Canadian cities are good models to follow.

We already have a pedway system. And Montreals syetem is kind of cool, but its really nothing more than a mall.

I'm always surprised at how many people have lived here for years, but know nothing of the Pedway.
