Why do some restaurants not locate in the inner city? Like Steak N Shake and maybe Culvers or Red Robin? Is there something about the inner city that makes it unprofitable for them?

I hate that I have to drive to the suburbs for Steak N Shake!

That's a 22 page thread to search for some answer!

Steak N Shake would do well if placed in Wicker Park & etc...

Maybe, maybe not. In some areas of town land is too expensive(i.e. downtown). In others there just not enough income to support them(i.e. Ghettos).

Sometimes, even if they did locate in a so-called ghetto, there may not be interest. I personally know some people who do live in "ghetto" areas that swear by Mickey D's and Wendy's. Middle income people are more likely to go for Olive Garden, Red Robin, Sonic, Applebees...etc. Sometimes it's not just about income.

Depends on the ghetto..

McDonalds seems to be able to survive anywhere but Wendy's nope. When I lived on the west side the only one that was near by went out of bis shortly there after. In the poorest areas I rarely find a Wendy's.

Chicago has great restaurants that blow crappy chains out of the water. End of story.

On my numerous travels I have seen a few Wendy's in Englewood. Then again, I never stop to really look lol. I keep right on going to my destination.

Yeah, you don't typically find Wendy's in REALLY poor areas. But I just thought I'd mention I noticed a few.

Several reasons:

1) They can't get enough land at a reasonable cost.
2) The costs of operating in the city of Chicago is generally a lot higher than operating in the suburbs.
3) Population density makes it harder to have a "drive thru" due to noise concerns.

In many other cities, you see the chains in the inner-cities.
