I was visiting Chicago this weekend and met up with different friends to discuss ideas of where I should live. I got mixed signals from all of my friends. I am 38 years old, single, never been married and no children. I own my own business and work from home. I am looking for a neighborhood that has singles like me, love sports and looking to make new friends, like nice restaurants, love to shop, coffee shops etc. I was told about all these different neighborhoods and drove through them, but was hoping I could get an outsiders view. My friends all want me to move to their neighborhood, but I want to move where I would feel the most comfortable. I liked Andersonville but seemed pretty far north. I liked Roscoe Village (I think that is what it is called) but it seemed to be just one main drag. Did I miss something? Lincoln Park seems lily white and not much culture and I am wondering if Wicker Park is too young. Any advice would be awesome!

If I missed a neighborhood, let me know as I will be visiting several times in the next month.

Thanks!!!

You say Andresonville is "too far north." Too far north from what? Does it matter if you're working at home?

I'd also give Lincoln Square a look.

Finally, you'll get a much better response if you post in the Chicago forum rather than the general Illinois forum.

Thanks. I will post there as well.

Working from home can be awesome and can be a curse. I want to leave my house at 5:00 pm where as most people want to get home, put there feet up and stay there. If I want to go out for dinner, get a glass of wine, or just get out after 5:00 pm, is Andersonville too far from downtown, or is there enough to keep me occupied in the area?

There's plenty going on up in Andersonville. There is relatively little nightlife downtown, though there is some just north of it. But that nightlife district tends to be more for older, more well-heeled folks and tourists. If you need a change of scenery from Andersonville, you can get to a number of other nightlife spots like Lakeview, Lincoln Park, Lincoln Square Roscoe Village, and downtown Evanston in 30 minutes or less.

Are there neighborhoods that I have mentioned that are more racially mixed? When spending time in Lincoln Park over the weekend, I was shocked by the lack of non-Caucasians.

When spending time on the southside of Chicago over my entire life I have been shocked at the lack of caucasians in at least 75% of the neighborhoods. :

Your point is WHAT?

I spent Christmas in Chicago and was very surprised about the state of racial relations. I was all over Lincoln Park and the city and counted 1 or 2 at the most non-caucasians that were not in the service industry. One thing to be proud of in Philly, at least we are a true "American Melting Pot". Shocked!

I'm a little perplexed by what you're saying. The service sector of the economy is so broad, or course there are plenty of non-Caucasians with jobs in it. Certainly in Chicago there are plenty of minorities working in restaurants, working in law, education, media, as healthcare workers...the list goes on and on.

I'm not sure what you're saying is different in Philadelphia. Are you saying that in Philadelphia most minorities work in things like manufacturing/distribution/extractive industries? Or that the service sector is almost all whites there? Why would that be better?

Oh yeah, if there's a city that's really hit a home run on race relations, it's Philly. A city that's almost exclusively black and white no less -- wow, what a melting pot!

Did you happen to ever step foot outside of Lincoln Park, or did you base your opinion on the entire city based on only one of its hundreds of neighborhoods? I don't remember seeing a lot of non-white faces in Center City but I'm sharp enough to understand that one neighborhood is not necessarily an accurate representation of a city of 1.5 million people.

Here's an ethnic distribution map of your "melting pot":
