I'm ready to "leave the nest" and move out to Chicago, more mentally than financially right now, but the intent is there. The only problem is, how? What do I do? Do simply go there with a lot of money, stay at a cheap motel or hostel and get a job? What's the procedure? I'd ask my extended family (I live in Michigan, one uncle lives in Florida, the other in Alaska), but their circumstances were different.

Any advice is much appreciated. Thank you!

Number one is to have some savings, then I would hit Craigslist. Find a room sharing situation you can live with. Find someone who needs a roommate who is already established in the city. It could be for 3-6 months just to get your feet wet and start looking for work etc. This will also be cheaper than going it alone.

When I first came back to the city I had a friend or two. My first winter was in a buddies unheated basement. It was rough going at first but I got through it. I have known others who made a stab at it and couldn't do it. It's not unheard of to pack up and go back to where you came from.

Good Luck.

P.S. The city's awesome. I can't imagine life outside of one.

i would not move to a big city. the economy is about to fully collapse. big city's are a rat race unless you are in a secret society, and part of the elite.

now if you have a degree, and are in law enforcement, young, and strong?

if so.....

go for it.

just remember.... very little food grows in a concrete jungle.

those can be mean streets there.

Food is dirt cheap in Chicago. You won't be busting your budget to feed yourself.

I don't know what doom and gloom bull**** you've been reading, but the economy is not about to collapse. Rather, it's growing again-- perhaps not at boom levels, but that's just fine.

The bottom line is this: if you can't find a job in Chicago, you're sure as hell not going to find it in some leafy, distant suburb of sprawldwellers and SUVs.

So... what was your point again?
