Actually, I hate it, so much money is wasted and is going into the pockets of worthless but politically connected people (hired truck scandal anyone) that if we recovered it, we would probably have the best public transportation and school system on the planet, and for us honest folks, it just really sucks to know that in order to get something done you have to sometimes play into the system.

Granted much humor has been generated as a result of this pervasive corruption, but in my mind it is that sort of bitter resigned humor akin to those who have lived in, shall we say, 'less than democratic' regimes.

... so no, I don't like it at all, not one bit.

Totally agreed on your every point.

The Olympics are a freakin' joke—and the fact they are being hosted in '08 by the barbarian, human-right-trampling, Communist thugs in Beijing makes them a travesty as well.

It's the 2016 bid Chicago is going for, so no one is making any decisions for another two years. The IOC was reportedly very impressed by the recent World Boxing Championship. The city is doing a lot to woo them, much to the chagrin of some Chicagoans. We're better equipped to handle it than Rio, which is considered the front runner because a lot of IOC types want to put it in a city in South America or Africa. Tokyo had the games in 64, I think, and London has them in 2012, so Madrid is looking less likely.

There's a thread on this in the Chicago forum as well.

Hey, thats better than Chin or Wang.

United Airlines as really been gearing up for it, with anticipated new routes to Moscow, that would only longer term benefit them when it's also anticipated their turn, (for Chicago). CHI has a good chance, a great chance, and other airlines are gearing up for other routes within Russia and increased volume to the Baltic states, Latvia, Estonia, etc, Georgia, Ukraine.

Chicago based UA can only help in providing a necessary service. But as it has been in the past, Russia's "govt" has pulled plugs and violated int'l agreements, the precarious old girl!

Yes, CHI has a preiminent status in the global city order.

It's preminent transportation hub role for starters!

There about to poison us all! I believe their economy is rocking the markets right now, imagine all the orders going back on their goods.

It couldn't hold a candle to New York, imo.

Difference is NY has a more slick way of covering it all up, more ad agencies, Madison Ave, etc.

Is Michigan Ave less skilled than Madison?

I would love that! I'd be delighted to see us stop buying all the crap we get from China, and start manufacturing our own stuff again.

Chicago IS one of the most corrupt cities ever. I lived my entire life there up until 2 months ago when I moved to Denver.

I honestly think they don't have a chance to win the Olympic bid. They can barely manage the mess that is the CTA!! Oh, and I ran in that god awful Chicago marathon too. Was one of the many people who didn't get to finish, sadly.

I really have gained a whole new perspective on Chicago after leaving.
