So I am on the cusp of moving to Chicago and so many people are adamantly opposed to me moving. One girl @ my job is so ferocious because she said that her mother just lost her non-profit funding from the state and that a lot of her friends lost their jobs, etc. My question is -- is the job market really that bad in Chicago? I know its all contingent on what field you go into, i.e. healthcare and education versus IT or manufacturing. Nonetheless, I have been reading overall Chicago's Job Market and Economy is one of the strongest in the nation. Surely its no NYC or DC, but the amount of industry there will make it more prone to rebound quickly versus any other area in country, i.e. Los Angeles, Miami, etc.

Any Opinions?

Things have been rough across all sectors in Chicago since the beginning of the year. However, it seems things are picking up. We had a discussion about this recently in the "are you feeling the recession thread". Where have you read that the Chicago market is one of the strongest in the country? If you look at job creation per capita, we are pretty low. Check out the interactive map from indeed.com: Where are the Jobs? | Indeed.com

Even if Chicago's job market is better than a lot of places in the nation, it's still pretty rough right now.

People I know are getting jobs and losing jobs. Getting hired and not getting hired. It truly depends on the person, the sector, the company, and the specific job.

Truthfully the job market is pretty sketchy all across the country and this is including Chicago. Its tough out there right now, I'm currently looking myself. Right now the medical field is hiring pretty well right now in Chicago. I know personally Chicago Lakeshore Hospital has a couple of counselor positions open right now as well as a few other hospitals in the Chicagoland metropolitan also. Really I can say its how you market yourself that will help you land a pretty decent job. Chicago has over 2 million people in the city alone and alot of them are competing for the same positions at whatever job they're applying for, but to me I feel its all in how you make yourself stand out amongst the other applicants that will help you get noticed. Check out the classified section of the Sun-times or the Tribune or check out Chicagojobs.com.... If anyone else see that I missed any other sites feel free to let me know after all I'm currently looking myself....
