One certainly ripped me off. Taking me from north Michigan Avenue to the Shedd Aquarium, he went all the way past Soldier Field to the beginning of Museum Park Drive rather than down McFetridge Drive, even though we were at the light at McFetridge. After that, I used my Blackberry to direct where we were going in cabs.

It was one of many I took and he was the only one who tried to drag out the ride. For the most part all of cab drivers were nice and took direct routes.

Actually, until very recently all traffic was forced to go around Soldier Field like that (the streetsigns actually tell you to go that way), so I'd chalk that up to an honest mistake/force of habit.

and just to reiterate what others are saying, dear god no, do NOT get a car, you will be miserable dealing with the traffic & the expense of parking (everywhere). cabs are plentiful, and many downtown cultural institutions/attractions are in close proximity.

I do suggest a river boat architecture tour, it's one of the best kept secrets in Chicago (no, I do not work for them!).

Take one of the architecture tours, the river ones are cool. If you are a cheapskate, take the water taxi from the Michigan Ave bridge to the vicinity of the Sears Tower, it's like $2.

Ooooo--love the idea of river architecture tour! Thank you Chi-town native and Intergalactic. Will definitely check it out and book. I am sooo glad to hear that renting a car is not necessary.

Thanks for the primer on cab operations Chigaros et al. I'll take shuttle from airport to hotel. Will figure out transportation options for sightseeing when I get there.

Now thinking I should have booked extra day to really experience Chicago
