Visiting Chicago for 2 days for work. How effective is the public transportation system?

Will I need a rental car? Commute from the airport to hotel is about 13 miles, and another 15 miles from the hotel to work.

Greetings from Texas, and happy new year.

Where is "work?" Where is the hotel? Which airport?

Seeing as you are coming from Texas and the weather out here is freezing, I'm thinking popping for a rental car is a sound investment

It is cold here this time of year, much colder than what most Texans are used to. So ofcjim40 is correct, you may want to rent a car.

But to answer the question more generically, I would say it depends on what part of the city you are planning to visit. If your work is in the Loop, as is your hotel, you could just take the Blue Line from Ohare to the Loop. If you are planning on visiting the non-walkable areas of Chicago (extreme north, west, or south parts of the city, as well as most suburbs) then, yes, you would need a car for that.

Other option would be to grab a cab, taxis are plentiful in most parts of the city.

Depending on where you are staying and where you are working, a car can be a necessity, a luxury, or a liability.

Yeah, get a rental car and taste the burgers from Culver's and Steak N Shake near Manheim and Touhy I think. Better than any Texas burger joint like Whataburger!

I would agree with everything you said but this. Getting a taxi outside of certian areas(Downtown, linlcon park and some areas of the northside) can require that you call one first. Only in those areas I mentioned can you stand a good chance of bieng able to hail one.

Tell us which area you're staying in and which area your work is in. 15 miles could be anywhere!

Why aren't you staying close to where you'll be working?
