Does anyone have good recommendations or experiences (good or bad!) with volunteering with schools or youth groups in the city? I was thinking of something along the lines of helping out with tutoring or mentoring in a group setting. I do not have a car so I would guess that could somewhat limit my options. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Try Chicago Cares. They have a few ongoing mentoring programs and all programs are accessible via public transportation. I volunteered with them for an after school art program last year and a few other beautification projects. The furthest I ever had to go was near Northeastern Illinois University.

Default don't live there yet, but here are a few links

You might also try these resources/places:

Good luck! I am moving to the city soon and hope to get involved in something similar. Seems as though there are a lot of places doing great work

My wife did this several years ago and had a rewarding experience. She even got invited over for dinner at Cabrini, and how many of you can say you've had dinner there?

I volunteered with Chicago Cares for Thanksgiving and Christmas '08. Great organization.
