I think it has to do with biology. More male babies die than female babies and women tend to live longer than men. I once read that it was because the production of sperm uses so much energy - I don't know if there's any validity to that, though. I don't think it has to do with behavior. Just saying.

For sure. Good point!

I think this would be good reasoning as a control but it certainly doesn't factor in urban variables. I'd be surprised if the percentage of african american women on the SS is not at least 5% higher than males in the 25 years< group due to gang violence and risky behaviors.

This is also a fairly young city. On the nearer northside (Lakeview and south) in particular I rarely see people over 50 walking around. So in some of the more trendy areas life expectancy doesn't come into play when most 40+ers are put on an ice berg and floated up to Buffalo Grove.

Really? Most of the lakefront high-rises that are not rentals are filled with little old ladies and older couples. The Gold Coast and Old Town are almost retirement communities now. The older lakefront residents do tend to stick to the eastern edge of Lake View and Lincoln Park, but they are definitely here in large numbers. They're the only ones who can afford that real estate, after all!

Oh no, I agree with Gold Coast. It is the viagra triangle after all but as far as the shopping corridors, obviously bar areas and general restaurant and street traffic I am overwhelmed by 20-somethings. I know that it predominantly concentrated to LP, Lakeview, WP, Bucktown, Ukie, LS etc but these areas have a high population concentration (more so than the outer ring Portage, Irving, Etc) so the northside as a whole often feels very young to me compared to other cities. I am from South Florida which is obviously where people go to die but I've spent years in New York and New Orleans before Chicago and Chicago is by far the youngest feeling city I've lived in.

Definitely, more males die because of violence in urban areas. (Males and their testosterone.) I'm a science geek, lol.

Now that I'm home during the day, I notice more of the older residents out on the street. I was briefly jobless when several years ago when I lived in Lincoln Park, and that's when the rich mommies and nannies took over the neighborhood. But yeah, the young do rule the streets in the neighborhoods you mentioned.

Production of sperm is cheaper, and more males die because they fight more and take more risks--all for improving their chances of mating.
