Definitley the Sears Tower. It demonstrates power struggles of the industrial era in the US where it was size that what mattered. On a serious note though, the Sears Tower and John Hancock represent an era where Daley Sr. wanted Chicago be known to be better than NY by having taller buildings and have a skyline reaching for the stars. Tis' sad those days are gone now and it is now thought to be unpopular to build these buildings as it is now thought to be non-environmentally friendly and instead you see huge sprawling campuses like the Sears campus in Hoffman Estates, Allstate Insurance up in the northern burbs, and basically most of what is out in the northern and western suburbs being built nowdays. I don't know how that thinking is better for the environment as now 10,000 employees that could have just walked to work or take mass transit into one of the Loop highrises are now forced to all drive into work for the same company which is now in the burbs, but anyhow, times have changed and I don't see nearly as many tall buildings going up as there were around here or nationwide for that matter, as they were in the 1910s - early 1970s.

Ironic that such an outrageous architectural curiosity was torn down to make way for an art museum, no?

It certainly isn't iconic but since this thread is made up of lots of kitsch, I figured I can sneak it in.

The facade of a house in the North Park neighborhood:

^ That is in the Hollywood Park neighborhood. North Park is the "community area." ^

Where have you been the last 20 years?

Probably half of the high rises and skyscrapers downtown were built in the last 20 years or so.
