So I guess I need to man up.

I'll say it again, if you were to end up moving to the neighborhoods you've been asking about, you'll be fine. Nice tree-lined streets, walkable business corridors with lots of independent shops (along with the same 4 banks at every corner), bars, restaurants, music venues, galleries, theatres, etc.

No place is perfect, and every area will have certain frustrations attached along with it, but the reason the neighborhoods you've looked at can be so expensive is that lots of people want to live there. Lots of people want to live there, because overall, its an extremely pleasant place to live.

Quickest route from LP to UIC is to take the Red Line to Jackson, transfer to the Blue Line, take it to UIC, and voila.
The Halsted bus is the definitely the fastest way to get to UIC from LP and LV, even though it's painfully slow during rush periods and it's always totally overcrowded in the morning (with commuters).
Taking the El you have to go through the loop which is a pretty time consuming detour AND you have to transfer.

Yeah well now my husband is talking about buying a condo! This is getting stressful- and he has put his foot down about Chicago. We know we are staying a min of 5 yrs but after that who knows. So the buying aspect changes the entire ball game!

BTW thanks yall for the input. Believe it or not even though I am even more confused than ever it has been really helpful because I know in the end I will be making informed choices once I sift through it all. So thanks!

=)

I am willing to bet you driving or taking the trains are way faster than taking the bus during the morning rush from Lincoln Park or Lake View to UIC. Sorry.
