I've ridden that very same Metra line countless times, day and night. In all honesty, the possibility of a relaxing Metra ride being "unsafe" has never really occurred to me. However, the possibility of being unsafe after I get off the Metra is always on my mind.

The Rock Island line is still called that, but that's a different line, a diesel line, a few miles west of the Metra Electric. That's the one that stops about every half a block in Beverly after zipping right through Englewood/Washington Park/Grand Crossing without stopping...

Thanks Drover. It's good to know the old Rock Island line is still running downtown.

Yes, I think you will be pleased with Metra's service. I ride every day to and frm work; I also take CTA pink line....now thats a mess. back on topic I think Metra is very safe and efficient. Hyde park is also seems to be a decent area...never lived there but I ride though every day and its seems to be a growing and professional area.

The Metra isn't the freakin' Red or Green line. Its completely safe at night.

The Metra doesn't attract the sort of urban crowd that the CTA does..while I've never ridden the Metra none of my friends that ever did have been offered to buy drugs, been offered free drugs, witness urination, vomiting or a variety of other problems that, while not common, exist on the CTA.

The metra is the safest form of public transportation in and out of the city. All of the suburban folks use it - even those in the undesirable suburbs. It's about 4 -6 bucks just to ride on the metra one way. I can't believe you'd assume it's not safe.

It's only five bucks for a weekend pass.. This doesn't include Friday. It means that for five bucks you can ride back and forth as many times as you want Saturday and Sunday.

1) This thread is effn' old -- the guy asked his question three years ago.

2) He didn't assume anything -- otherwise he wouldn't have bothered asking.

3) Why is his question so preposterous? How much do you know about the quality and issues of public transportation systems in cities you've never been to? And if the answer is "plenty," were you born with that knowledge or did you find out by doing things such as asking people who were more familiar with it?

You know what I did when I had to take the train late at night, I got in the first car and sat right behind the train operator. I'm female and on the CTA, I met some raw jerks. So that's what I did. I am coming back to Chicago this summer for good and will sit right behind the conductor again. Good luck

No street thug is gonna pick a pointless fight with a girl...

You can get sexually harassed at a country club too.
